Shigeru Yamago received his B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1986 and 1991, respectively, under the supervision of Professor Eiichi Nakamura. During that time, he joined Professor Peter Vollhardt's group at the University of California at Berkeley as a summer student (1988). He became an assistant professor at the same institute in 1991, moved to Kyoto University in 1995, Osaka City University in 2003 as full professor, and to the current position in 2006. He was a visiting scientist in Dr. Chryssostomos Chatgilialoglu's group at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Bologna (2000). He was a research fellow of the Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology (PRESTO) program in Japan Science and Technology Agency from 2002 to 2006. He received the Incentive Award in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Japan) in 2001, and . His research interests include the development of new and efficient synthetic methodologies based on the control of reactive intermediates and their applications to the design of new organic materials.

輝く分子を創ろう！

　合成化学は新しい反応や化合物を設計し、実際に作りだす創造的な学問です。私はこの合成化学の持つ創造性に最も魅力を感じて研究を続けています。我々の研究室では、研究に参加しているひとりひとりが「輝く分子（自慢の分子）」を作り出すことを目標に研究を行っています。また、その過程において、それぞれの研究に目標を定めますが、必ずしもそれは絶対的なものではありません。思いがけない発見（serendipity）を見つけることで、思いがけない研究の展開が起こることをも、基礎研究の醍醐味として味わいたいと常に思っています。

　「輝く分子」は必ずしも化合物自体が光を放っている必要はなく、「自分はこんな分子を作ったんだ！」と自慢できる分子のことを指しています。面白そうな構造や反応性、さらには物性を示しそうな分子を設計・合成するcuriosity drivenの研究姿勢を基本として、新しい化合物を合成することが、我々の研究の核となっています。さらに、その自分にとっての自慢の分子が化学（科学）の分野で輝く分子となり、さらには、人類の幸福のために輝く分子となることを目指しています。
