Q1. How about your lab life in Nakamura lab?
On weekdays, I usually arrive at the lab around 10:00, and leave around 19:00. But the time I leave lab may change depending on my experiments. Typically, my labmates and I take the weekend off. If necessary, we can perform some experiments or read papers on Saturday.
On Friday, we usually have Research Seminars, where we present our research results, followed by a group discussion.
Q2. Why did you choose Nakamura lab?
The reason why I chose this lab is connected to Prof. Nakamura’s “magnetic” personality. As a 2nd year undergraduate student, I took the “Organic Chemistry I” course taught by Prof. Nakamura. Through his teaching, I began to appreciate his unique ideas, and I became interested in his research. Since I had already decided to pursue a career as an organic chemist, the choice fell naturally on Nakamura lab and, so far, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience in this lab.
Q3. How about your research experience?
From a work perspective, my best day in this lab was when the analysis of my experimental results turned out to be consistent with my hypothesis. After my efforts, I truly felt elated. On the other hand, some days can be tough, for example when after a long purification process, I found out that my product was still a mixture of compounds from both TLC and NMR analysis.
Q4. What is your dream/goal?
Since I have joined this lab only one year ago, I am currently getting acquainted with organic synthesis and analytical techniques. My goal is to become a better organic chemist and to contribute to society by developing new sustainable technologies.
Q5. To the future members!
Nakamura lab is a great environment to grow as a chemist. Our groups has also close relationships and collaborations with companies, therefore we can also experience what it is like to be a chemist bonding directly to the society. If you enjoy doing experiment in the laboratory, do not hesitate to join us!
