Gibberellins (GAs) are a group of plant hormones that regulate growth, development, and environmental responses. During the "Green Revolution"of the mid-20th century, shorter (semi-dwarf) varieties of wheat and rice were introduced to agriculture worldwide. These varieties were highly resistant to lodging caused by wind and rain, which significantly increased crop yields. It was later discovered that these varieties were GA-biosynthetic or GA-response mutants. Dr. Norman Borlaug, who led the development of semi-dwarf cultivars for the Green Revolution, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions.
GA was first discovered by Eiichi Kurosawa in 1926. This symposium is held to mark this historic milestone and to discuss new research directions for the next generation. Although GA biosynthesis, perception, and signal transduction have been extensively studied, primarily in model plant species such as rice and Arabidopsis, many questions remain unanswered. At this symposium, leading researchers from around the world will present their latest findings, focusing on the following themes:
- Identification of GA-modifying enzymes that produce diverse chemical structures and their biological significance.
- Cellular localization, mobility of GAs within plants, and the transporters involved.
- Elucidation of GA signal transduction pathways, particularly post-translational modifications of signaling molecules and crosstalk with other signaling pathways.
- Evolution of GA biosynthetic and signaling pathways.
- Future contributions of GAs to agriculture.
This symposium will bring together world-leading GA researchers to share their latest insights. We also hope to inspire the next generation of young researchers to tackle these remaining challenges. Looking back at the history of gibberellin research, it is clear that an interdisciplinary approach combining chemistry and biology (especially genetics) has been essential. We warmly welcome not only GA specialists but also students and researchers studying other plant hormones, as well as plant scientists interested in interdisciplinary approaches combining chemistry and biology.
